The Adventures of Musashi Jr.
======================================================
Background:

Musashi no Bouken was originally translated way back in
2000 by Gaijin Translations. It's bluntly stated in the
readme that the translation had to be butchered in order
to fit it back in the ROM. Anyhow, aishsha and I looked
at it and saw room for improvement and started our own
translation from scratch.

Work initially started back in 2015 after we finished
Rainbow Silkroad. aishsha did all the hacking and
translation. It was a fairly short game and not too menu-
heavy, so an easy and relatively quick hack compared to
our other projects. It also helped that aishsha had access
to notes and some work done by Djinn. Anyhow, I came along
at the end and did a bunch of polishing hacks and went over
portions of the script with Ryusui and harmony7.
cccmar and Xanathis tested the game and provided script
suggestions.

As an embarrassing and possibly humorous anecdote, the game
contains several enemy names which don't make sense, possibly
due to a lack of kanji. So, I thought maybe I'd ask one of the
guys who designed the monsters, if he could tell me more on
a long shot. So, I had a friend in Tom compose a message in
Japanese, which I then sent to who I thought was the right
person, but as it turns out was not the person I thought.
Whoops...

As for the game itself, it's your standard DQ clone from
the era and takes place in medieval Japan. The game
is loosely inspired by the life of Musashi Miyamoto.
Other than that, it's a somewhat funny game.

aishsha's comments

I believe this whole project started just in the middle
or after the work on Rainbow Silkroad. Basically, I wanted
to check whether the translation had the same issues
as RS, and it proved to be right. Moreover, I had a
chance to look through the Russian translation of
Musashi, but that one was also based on the English one
and suffered from the same problems. Basically, those
were squished menus/items and cut text here and there.
The game was pretty fast but rather tedious to hack
(due to the way the text was stored), but with today's
knowledge it was still a pretty straightforward road
after the ROM expansion. My pretty rough translation
(yeah, I'm a purist, I know that) itself was proofread
and adapted by Ryusui and that guy means no shit :)
The game itself reminded me of Rahoi in places, though
I liked it less. In any case, it's a very short and
easy adventure full of quirky humor loosely based on
Japanese legends and fables. For those guessing what
all those items are for - we've also translated and
adapted the game manual.
Kudos to all the folks who made this translation
possible.
Enjoy the game and buy the original if you liked it!

Patching Instructions
======================================================
Due to limitations in the IPS format and the changes I
made to the ROM, I'm only supporting BPS and xdelta formats
for this game. You can download a program to patch from here:

https://www.romhacking.net/patch/

Apply either patch to the Japanese version of the game:

Musashi no bouken (J).nes

P.S.

Support the game industry by buying used games!

Even if the money doesn't go to the developers
directly, as the games become rare and harder
to find, the price goes up, and people become
more inclined to buy new releases "while they can!"

The final patch was not tested extensively, so if you
find any errors, please let me know. If someone wants
to provide me a full write up of the sound editor mode,
I would appreciate it.
